KINGSLEY held its annual summer fete, with traditional stalls, games and family fun.

The event, on June 11, included a barbecue, cream teas, a tombola, a raffle and games stands which, organiser Wayne Moulds said, “remain ever popular”.

Although attendance was not as strong as in some previous years, it was still said to have been “a very pleasant day”.

As well as the classic activities, the event featured an innovative spin on a fete favourite.

Having realised he had forgotten to pick up coconuts, Mr Moulds explained a last minute alteration to a stall.

“After a dash to a large shop, which unfortunately did not have any (coconuts), I had to improvise, and the coconut shy quickly became the swede shy,” he said.

“This was instantly a source of amusement for all and, as the prizes were now fresh fruit (I couldn’t really offer a bashed swede), it remained as popular as ever.

“One of the most popular new attractions was the first visit to our fete by a gentleman called Simon with his array of birds of prey.

“Visitors flocked (excuse the pun) to learn about these beautiful birds and were able to hold and stroke some of them.

“They were also treated to several flying displays. Simon will hopefully become a regular at future events. We have already booked him for next year.

“As always, it is at this point that I must mention that this annual event could not happen if it were not for the efforts of my team on the Kingsley United Sports Club committee, the club members and all of our family and friends who volunteer to plan, prepare for and give up their time to deliver on the day.

“As chairman, I am extremely grateful to them all, and to the visitors who attend to make a success of the day, which raises much-needed funds to maintain the upkeep of the club for cricket and as a venue for parties and other functions.”
