HASLEMERE residents have been reassured there will be no reduction in the number of firefighters covering the town, despite two of its crew being drafted to Cranleigh. As part of a pilot programme, two Haslemere firefighters will be relocated to Cranleigh Fire Station, to ensure at least one fire engine is always available in that area. The officers based in Cranleigh would also be able to provide improved cover for Dunsfold and Godalming. But at last Friday's meeting of Surrey County Council's local committee for Waverley, area manager Gavin Watts said the changes did not mean lowering the fire cover for Haslemere. Mr Watts told the committee that the two departing Haslemere firefighters would be replaced with two further officers to keep numbers in the area the same. Committee members said they supported the work of retained firefighters in Waverley and gave their support to the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Performance Report for the borough.
