FIREFIGHTERS were at their quick-thinking best last week when they arrived to put out a vehicle fire.

Flames engulfed a bin lorry in Reading Road, Heckfield, destroying the cab. Fire crews from Rushmoor and Fleet arrived to find diesel and engine oil gushing from the blaze onto the road.

To contain the pollution, firefighters quickly built a makeshift dam out of earth. Their prompt action stopped contamination spreading across the farmland.

The crew spread special absorbent pads over the slick – the white blotches in the picture – to soak up the oil. They disposed of it safely later on.

The driver escaped unharmed, and there were no injuries.
