AN impressive 1,900 people turned out for Chawton’s annual bonfire and fireworks extravaganza last Saturday.

Chawton has marked Guy Fawkes Night for more than 35 years having begun life in the village car park, organised and attended by villagers.

Today, people come from miles around.

Organised by Martin and Jayne Whittock and Richard Lane, with the help of family and friends, this event always has a good community feel and benefits the Scouts (who organise the food and provide marshalling) and the cricket club (whose members provide the venue and the bar and profit from the gate fees) and supports village projects and funds the next year’s display.

Mr Whittock said "lots of positive feedback” has been received via social media, which “makes all the hard work that goes into organising this event worthwhile”.

For the first time, this year’s display was videoed by drone, which was operated by Ethan Whittock.

The firework finale bathed the sky in red as a tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the end of the First World War.
