WAVERLEY Council says all residents can expect a simpler approach to their refuse and recycling collection when fixed day collections begin in the new year, replacing the "rollover" system. John Sandy, Waverley's portfolio holder for the environment, explained: "When we were elected we promised Waverley residents that we would improve the way their refuse and recycling was collected. "The basic idea behind the fixed day collections is that residents will have their refuse and recycling collected on the same day every week all year round, with the exception being over Christmas and new year. "We believe that this much simpler system will ease many of the difficulties that residents have been experiencing." The current alternate weekly collection system will remain. For example, if a resident's collection day is a Monday, they will have their refuse collected one Monday and their recycling collected the following Monday, even when there is a bank holiday. Christmas and New Year arrangements will be dealt with on a year-by-year basis. John Sandy continued: "We have held talks with the contractor and, I am pleased to say, that we are now able to implement the fixed day system from the beginning of the new year. "To inform residents of the changes we will be sending out a special newsletter complete with a new calendar to each household, which will explain the new collection arrangements in full. "There will also be details about the arrangements for Christmas 2007 and contact details for any questions or queries people may have."
