PETERSFIELD town centre looks set welcome six new flats after East Hampshire District Council's south planning committee approved the move. The land in question is to the rear of 20 Dragon Street, which is currently a car park. A similar plan was refused last year, but applicants Heroncrest Limited revised their latest proposals with many of the planning officers' concerns taken into consideration. The car parking layout on the new plans had been rearranged, a secure cycle store would be provided, and the bin store would be relocated. Another concern was the closeness of the proposed development to neighbouring properties at Toby Garden. To allow for that, the applicants altered their plans to change the first-floor side windows on the south elevation into high-level roof lights. They also planned to reduce the size of the building and clarify the ownership of a hedge that runs between the two. Councillors were concerned that residents might wish to cut the hedge down, and sought assurance that it would remain in tact. Anne Claxton said: "I came prepared to vote in permission. It is in the middle of the town, the car parking would be all right, but I am concerned about the hedge. I do not know who would cut it." Elizabeth Cartwright added: "I would be concerned if there was a possibility of this hedge coming down." Councillors originally wanted to refuse the application, which would then be expected to go to appeal, but EHDC planning officer Julia Mansi assured councillors that the land management plan ensured the hedge had to remain, and it was voted through 8-4. n The former Crossing Gates pub in Liss could be turned into flats, following its closure last year. An application for the pub, based on Station Road, has been received by East Hampshire District Council south planners to turn the building into two blocks comprising seven flats and three shops. The pub would be demolished. Councillors will make a site visit to what they feel is a "landmark" building in the village.
