IF you fancy trying your hand at fishing, or learning some bushcraft skills, then Fleet pond nature reserve is the place to go tomorrow.
Hart District Council has announced the return of its popular wildlife day. Countryside rangers and the Fleet Pond Society will be on hand from 11am–3pm to show visitors around and demonstrate new skills.
The event is free and suitable for all ages. Dogs are welcome if they are kept on a lead.
At a series of educational stalls, experts will teach different aspects of wildlife or biodiversity. Many of the stalls will be interactive, offering hands-on learning, such as bug hunting, bird gliders and pond-dipping.
Organisations attending include The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Hart Wildlife Rescue, RSPB and the Butterfly Conservation Trust.
Even though the event is free, the organisers advise guests to bring a little spare cash. Wildlife–related items will be on sale, along with delicious food provided by the Chieftain Explorer Scouts.
Speaking about the event, councillor Anne Crampton, cabinet member for community wellbeing said: “The wildlife day is an educational family fun day and we look forward to welcoming residents and new visitors. Thank you to everyone involved in making this day enjoyable for all.”
Car parking is limited at the pond, so the rangers are asking local visitors to leave their car at home and take a leisurely stroll to the site instead.
There will be signposts from all access points around the reserve pointing you in the direction of the stalls. The route will be easy to find from Chestnut Grove or Wellington Avenue.
