AS the heavy rain continued last week, Haslemere councillors discussed the flooding problem in the light of the recent drainage improvements to the High Street.

At a meeting of last week's amenities sub committee, councillors agreed that although the new measures had proved successful, the problem would continue to grow in a manner that was perhaps beyond their control.

Stephen Mulliner said that he understood that the drainage system had worked effectively during last week's bad weather.

He said that on the third occasion of heavy rain since the High Street improvements had been completed, flooding had not been a problem, giving Marley Flowers as an example which had suffered in the past.

Ted Orchard said that they had not solved the flooding at Fosters Bridge with the culverts no longer able to take the water.

But Mr Mulliner pointed out that "the person who controls the level of water coming down from the heavens is not on this council".

Mary Foryzewski said "We are currently seeing a change in our climate, over the last two years, and that the situation is getting worse".

Mr Orchard added that the High Street did look much better, and that the council should congratulate the Highways Agency for completing the work with the minimum of disruption.

Other members of the committee agreed, with Mrs Foryzewski adding that the Haslemere Chamber of Trade had "done a fantastic job" with it event-a-day activities to maintain interest in the town.
