KELLY’S Cycle Challenge at Alice Holt Forest has raised more than £30,000 for Challengers, with nearly 500 riders setting off to ride on the three challenging routes through quiet country roads in Hampshire and Surrey.

They had staggered starts so they were spread out to minimise any inconvenience to others and in the interests of safety.

Following the event cyclist Kate Madocks-Wright said: “A huge thank you for everyone’s efforts yesterday. I thought the whole day was so well organised and a joy to be a part of.

“I can only imagine the organisation that went into it so a huge thank you to everyone for making it such a fun and safe day out.”

The picturesque routes also received rave reviews, and riders enjoyed healthy food options at the feed stations supplied by Nourish, the Farnham-based natural kitchen.

Kelly’s Storage Charity Events organised the event, and paid all costs and all the money raised went directly to Challengers, a local charity that helps disabled children.

Moira Martin, director, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have raised such a fantastic amount, over £30,000, for this wonderful charity who provide invaluable help and support to families with disabled children and young adults. They are a lifeline to many in the area.”

The weather was dry and the atmosphere at headquarters was happy and relaxed with cyclists and their families enjoying the sunshine, eating treats from Robyn’s Nest, drinking smoothies and enjoying mouthwatering ice creams.

A children’s version of a cylcocross was set up in the field and was highly popular with all the children. There was also a separate seven-mile route through the forest for families, which was enjoyed by around 60 adults and children.

Staff from Kelly’s Storage came along to join volunteers from Challengers and Farnham Lions who helped on the day.

Local clinic, Farnham Chiropractic Wellness Centre generously provided its services on the finish line, with sports massages given for a donation to Challengers.

Other companies such a Spokes & Spanners the Farnborough bike shop, CycleSmith bike mechanic, Highpoint Recruitment and the Phoenix Theatre and Arts Centre offered their time, services and prizes on the day.

Challengers’ chief executive Laura Sercombe said: “What an absolutely incredible day, the atmosphere at the HQ for the event was buzzing with smiling people.

“We are overwhelmed with people’s generosity for Challengers and cannot believe we have raised over £30,000, none of this would be possible without the support of Kelly’s Charity Events – we are so grateful for their on-going support.

“The difference this will make to the families that rely on Challengers is huge. The money will be going towards summer activities such as boating, climbing, trips to Harry Potter World and so much more.

“This money enables disabled children to have fun and make friends in a supportive environment, whilst also giving families a short break from caring so they can relax or spend time with other children which is invaluable for everyone.”
