SHOCKWAVES have spread through the town with the news that a former head of music at The Petersfield School has been banned from teaching for life. It comes after James Eaton, 37, was found guilty by a professional conduct panel of "unacceptable professional conduct" which was "likely to be repeated". The disgraced teacher refused to attend and was not represented at last month's public hearing, which he had previously asked to be held in private. Eaton was banned from working with children again and will not have the right to a review of the prohibition order. The serious misconduct hearing was conducted by the National College for Teaching and Leadership on behalf of the Department for Education. Among the allegations put before the panel was evidence that Eaton conducted several residential trips with pupils without first obtaining proper authorisation. The panel heard that on one trip to an outdoor activity centre in the New Forest between June 10, 2011, and June 13, 2011, he told boys "to put ice cubes in their pants" as a forfeit and insisted it was kept secret, as well as telling them to have cold showers in their pants or swimming trunks as punishments. He also filmed pupils without the prior consent of parents and issued cameras to students encouraging them to take photographs of each other during swimming activities.
