A FORMER Treloar’s governor for more than 20 years has been named as one of the recipients in the New Year Honours list.

Bruce Powell, of Bentley, is set to be awarded an MBE for his services to education.

He became a governor at the special school in February 1990, and retired from Treloar’s in 2015 after 25 years of service, including 13 years as chairman of the Treloar Trust.

Throughout his time at Treloar’s, one of his many achievements was the Vision Treloar’s appeal, launched to build a new campus enabling the co-location of the trust, school and college in Holybourne.

Simon Birch, chief executive of the Treloar Trust, said: “We are delighted Bruce’s work has been recognised.

“His leadership and vision were instrumental in making Treloar’s the outstanding provider it is today.”

On receiving his award, Bruce said: “My initial reaction was one of surprise and then of great pleasure at the implied tribute from my fellow governors in education over many years.”

Other work by Bruce includes his tenure as governor at various Haberdashers’ livery company state schools – from which he retired in 2019.

He is currently chairman of Holyport College.

Looking back on his years of work, Bruce said: “Without doubt the proudest moments came with the opening of new schools – Treloar School in Holybourne, Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby Academy in Telford & Wrekin, Haberdashers Aske’s Borough Academy in Southwark, Holyport College near Windsor – marking new educational opportunities for young people.”
