INSPIRED by the performance in the Olympics, Britain is having its own sports day. On Saturday (August 27) more than a thousand clubs up and down the country are opening their doors and encouraging people to come along and have a go.
The initiative is being run under the title of ‘Join In – I Am Team GB’ but unlike the Olympics these sports are not just for the sporting warriors that we see on the TV but for ordinary people looking for enjoyable exercise.
Floorball hockey is one of these sports and the saying used in this newly recognised Olympic sport is ‘there’s no ought in sport’ meaning that players should choose a sport that they look forward to playing each week.
The growth of floorball from it’s first world cup 20 years ago to today, where it is played in 62 countries, must be due to the enjoyment it brings to players.
Farnham Unihockey and Floorball Club is running a free drop-in session from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Farnham Leisure Centre for anyone aged from eight to 15 years old.
The session will be run by members of the GB Floorball national team who believe that they can get someone playing the game within five minutes of picking up a stick.
There is also field hockey at Monkton Lane, CanDo Running Aldershot, a park run at Alice Holt in Farnham, dressage in Guildford and many more.
Details of where and when can be found on the ‘I Am Team GB’ website. All of these events are separate from the Farnham Community Games which takes place on Bank Holiday Monday which is purely a local event.
