THE big pond at Frensham Great Pond and Common has re-opened six weeks after the discovery of unsafe levels of blue-green algae.

Waverley Borough Council received its latest algal analysis report from the Environment Agency last Friday and, based on the results showing safe levels of blue-green algae, is now allowing people to go back into the water.

The pond closed on July 19, on one of the hottest days of the year so far, and the Environment Agency has since tested the water on a weekly basis, culminating in last week’s all clear.

Blue-green algae naturally occurs in estuaries, the sea and in inland waters but can produce toxins strong enough to kill wild animals, domestic pets and farm livestock, and can lead to illnesses and rashes in humans.
