FRENSHAM, serial champions in the 1980s and 90s, looked more like their old selves as they recorded a convincing victory on their first meeting with Wood Street on Saturday.
Put in to bat on a damp pitch, Frensham amassed 220-3 in 44 overs. Despite the tricky spin of Haymon (3-87 in 22 overs), openers Maxwell and Potter put on an excellent 92. Maxwell and Nick Green added an entertaining 60 for the second wicket, and then Harrison pushed the score along with some hard hitting and quick running.
Jon Green and Stone set about Wood Street's top order and the visitors lurched to 21-5 before Burke and C Tester made the score more respectable with some good hitting. But Green returned to polish off the tail, finishing with 6 for 22 in 11.5 overs, and rounding off a fine performance by Frensham who picked up only their second win of the season.
Grayshott got back to winning ways against a weakened Fernhurst side. Batting first proved tricky on a drying wicket against the accuracy of Howe and Melrose. Wheble played an unusually patient innings, with his 50 coming up in the 24th over. He and Hunt saw off the worst of the conditions, allowing the middle order to score freely for 10 overs. Coleshill and Haywood played their shots and Grayshott made an early declaration at 153-7 after 40 overs.
Fernhurst lost a wicket before tea, but Eastment and Melrose then built a solid partnership. However, none of the batsmen could cope with the pace and accuracy of Matt Haywood who ripped through the middle order to take his first five- wicket haul in the I'Anson. Lindsey-Clark's second spell was better and he ended the game by dismissing P Heath (32) to a great catch in the gully by Baker.
Another excellent fielding performance by Dogmersfield was wasted by poor application with the bat for a second successive week. Put in to bat, Tilford struggled against the formidable home attack, with Ross Bowers bowling superbly to take 7 for 33 in 18.4 overs. Gavin Nesbitt's 36 proved crucial, however, as Tilford battled their way to 134 all out.
It should never have been enough, but a combination of bad batting and fine bowling by Martyn and Purdie saw Tilford to an easy victory. Only Tim Shirley showed any real resistance as Purdie spun his way to 5 for 43 in 15 overs to leave Dogmersfield all out for 77.
The Bourne hoped to beat Thursley, who are stuck to the foot of the table. However, despite a breakthrough in the ninth over, the bowlers, eight of them in total, consistently failed to put the ball in the right place. Sylvester and Rees put them to the sword and breezed along at about five runs an over while putting on 110. Sylvester began to accelerate and was finally stumped four runs short of a deserved century, Thursley making a midway declaration at 231-9.
Bourne responded with their first 50 opening stand of the season, with Sale and Woods scoring at a pace that would allow for acceleration in the last 15 overs. Barnes contributed a measured 45, but as both he and Woods were approaching their fifties, they gave Sylvester some catching practice and the momentum was lost. Bowden was still dangerous at number 6, but Treadwell took two wickets with successive deliveries and Bourne decided to settle for the two points.
Puttenham comprehensively beat early championship rivals Cranleigh SA by eight wickets. Asked to bat first on a good-looking Snoxhall track, St Andrews could only muster a meagre 73 against a tight Puttenham bowling attack. At one stage, they were 50-3, but the unnecessary run-out of Australian Dan Knight led to a dramatic collapse. The pick of the bowlers was off-spinner Budd who returned outstanding figures of 5 for 4 in 4.5 overs.
Puttenham lost a wicket in the second over, but opener Lumsden and Matt Cook ensured a vital win for Puttenham. This is the first time St Andrews have lost in over a year, and they will need to regroup for this week.
Lindford got off the mark with a sweet victory at local rivals Headley. Lindford totalled 142-8 and dismissed the home side for 91 to take maximum points. Unfortunately for Lindford, there are no further details.
