THE Hedgehogs of Farnham held their first Frensham Sponsored Horse Ride (FSHR) last Sunday - superseding the highly successful Frensham Sponsored Ride held over the last four decades in Tilford.

More than 500 riders came from a wide area of the South East and significantly beat the organisers’ original projections. Weather conditions were ideal and the ride, held over 10 miles across both public and private land, benefited from the recent drier conditions.

Proceeds from the FSHR will support a number of local charities, organisations and ‘local people in need’. The final sum raised on the day, net of running costs, will be substantial and will certainly make the FSHR one of the Hedgehogs’ most successful fundraising events.

The sum raised could not have been achieved, however, without the financial support of the FSHR’s key sponsors; A-Plan Insurance, Arbour Companion & Care, SLK Design, Tech Renew Shop, MJK and the Farnham Herald.

On the day itself the Hedgehogs were supported by its band of more than 100 volunteers who acted as jump, road, track and administration stewards. In addition, assistance was given by the Air Training Corps who superbly managed the Half Way Café and the Venture Scouts who did a great job erecting the registration marquee.

Brian Lacey and Bob Hockey, joint chairs of the organising committee, said “The Hedgehogs are extremely grateful to our sponsors, volunteers, local land owners but particularly the members of the FSHR ride committee for their guidance and sustained help.

“Last but by no means least the riders and horses that made the day not only a great financial success but a fun day enjoyed by all. We were privileged to be able to participate in such an amazing event; thank you to everyone who made this possible!

“Finally, can we also thank the forbearance of the local communities whose tranquillity may have been disrupted by the event.”
