STAFF at a Petersfield supermarket have raised £400 for their charity of the year by going bananas for the day.

A caring bunch of Tesco employees have proved the saying that you are what you eat by coming to work in a range of fruity costumes.

Workers at the Causeway store dressed up as bananas, strawberries and grapes last Friday to encourage shoppers to eat healthily.

The amusing spectacle was part of a day of fun events at the store to raise funds for Diabetes UK, the retailer's charity of the year.

There were also raffles for shoppers and staff, with respective prizes including Tesco vouchers and the prospect of a free and welcome day off.

Tesco Causeway representative Sheila Barker-Wallis said workers paid a minimum of £1 to come to work in fancy dress or non-uniform.

"There were various things going on within the store and I think the back office raised quite a bit by holding their own raffle," she said.

"There were some big donations. I was amazed with how many customers have diabetes, so it's a charity close to our hearts."

The Petersfield branch has the best fundraising record within its regional group and further events are planned, including an American-themed day on July 4.
