A CAMPAIGN to abolish fuel debt in Farnham has been met with an "amazing" response by the Farnham public.

Donations are already pouring in for Project Wenceslas, with almost £3,000 collected in the first eight days of the campaign.

The scheme was founded by the Farnham Lions to redistribute Winter Fuel Payments to help those struggling to keep warm this winter.

Older people who do not depend upon the Government payments are asked to donate them for onward distribution to those caught in the fuel debt trap.

A household is deemed to be in 'fuel debt' if it is unable to clear its utility accounts in full. More than 50 households in Farnham are said to be in serious fuel debt.
