RST it was drivers who didn't know the way, now Stagecoach can boast a driver who thinks it's not worth stopping for half-fares.

Jean Parratt caught a No.19 bus from The Borough to Farnham Hospital last Thursday afternoon.

She says when she paid her 30p half fare the driver "snarled" at her and said: "It isn't worth stopping for you people in Farnham. If it wasn't for you, we'd get a decent pay rise."

Mrs Parratt said she replied sarcastically: "Oh, I'm terribly sorry."

She then sat down and realised that at least three of the four people the driver had just picked would have paid reduced fares.

"Without pensioners and students, who are either too old, too young or to poor to afford to drive cars, there would be a marked reduction in bus passengers and he could find himself without a job at all," said Mrs Parratt.

"Next time I see that driver I will thank him and give him a beaming smile - it will not cost me anything but it might help him see that courtesy costs nothing, neither does a happy face."

Stagecoach Hampshire and Surrey operations manager Graham Harmer said: "From the information given by Mrs Parratt we will be able to identify the driver.

"Those aren't the sort of comments we would like our members of staff to make, so we will be interviewing the driver.

"We have an NVQ scheme in place which goes some way to helping with these problems."

He added that reduced fares are subsidised by local councils, so drivers are not paid any less, as his driver had implied.

In December, we reported how Rowledge school children sometimes had to give Stagecoach drivers directions.
