FERNHURST is revving up the preparations for May’s traditional village fair, May queen crowning and revelry.
The Fernhurst Revels comes to the village and the century old tradition of crowning the May Queen will be repeated again on Sunday, May 15.
A century ago the coronation was the be-all-and-end-all, now it is just the first of many attractions filling a large proportion of the recreation ground and attracting many visitors.
The procession will leave Nappers Wood for the recreation ground at 12.30pm with music leading the old and new May queens and their entourage of heralds, garland bearers, crown bearers, page boys, flower scatterers and accompanied by St George and the dragon in a very good fight.
Rev Nick Haigh will bless the new May Queen, Erin Haigh, before she is crowned by last year’s May Queen, Daisy Skelton. St George will then kill the dragon for his queen and the children of Fernhurst Primary School will dance around the maypole.
Around the grounds archery, skittles, children’s games, cricket skills, raffles and mini-train rides will all be there. Visitors can also try the tombola, bid at the silent auction, admire the classic cars.
There will be plenty of food including a hog roast, barbecued burgers and sausages, sandwiches, cakes, cream teas and ice creams.
The fancy dress parade theme this year is ‘The Four Seasons’ and is open to all ages.
