Jousting knights, a Stone Age man and a dinosaur brought all eras of history together as families enjoyed fun in the sunshine at The South Downs Show.

The event was held at Queen Elizabeth Country Park on Butser Hill last Saturday and Sunday and was organised by Steve Jacob and Ben Errey of Petersfield festival company Hometown Events.

One of the biggest attractions was the Knights of Nottingham jousting group, which brought sword swinging thrills to the festival.

The Knights have been on horseback for 55 years and their history includes winning two world jousting championships in the USA and performing for royalty.

Riders and horses were dressed in matching colourful costumes bearing their respective coats of arms, and one knight celebrated victory by riding around the arena with a drink in a pewter tankard. There was plenty of audience participation, comedy and lance-clashing entertainment for all.

There was a helter-skelter and a big wheel for those seeking fairground attractions, and a dog show brought a huge variety of breeds into the ring.

A wide range of stalls provided more interest for the crowds attending the event. Jade’s Little Studio was open for children who wanted their faces painted, while Rescue Bear invited people to visit the Hampshire Search and Rescue stand.

Animals adorned the hand-crafted designer cups on sale from Ink Fusion, Hayling Hog Roast was among those feeding the hungry, Kaztique Fashion Accessories sold dresses and bags, and Cedar Lodge Garden Rooms invited people into its Pod365.

Other stallholders included the Portsmouth Greyhound Trust, Marlowe’s Mini Makers, Pop & Grind and Hampshire County Council.

There were llamas to meet, plus a display of different breeds of sheep from The Farming Community Network.

The Knights of Nottingham said: “We always have so much fun at the fantastic South Downs Show - and this year was no exception!”
