BUDDING musicians across Hampshire are invited to bid for a £600 share of funding to help them develop their talents. Applications are invited for the 2008 round of Dayas Music Scholarships. This is an annual grants scheme administered by Hampshire County Council set up from money left by Mrs Gwendoline Hayton (née Dayas), a former Hampshire teacher, in her will. These music scholarships give people above school-age the chance to seek support for new musical interests, to have lessons to refresh 'rusty' music skills in singing or playing an instrument, or to further develop skills in areas such as composition, conducting and performance. David Kirk, HCC's executive member for education, said: "HCC is committed to developing musical talent across the county. The Dayas Scholarships play a key role in achieving this. I would encourage all those keen to develop their musical skills and talents to get in touch and apply for a grant. "The application process is all dealt with in writing so there need be no audition fears – this is not the X factor! But we hope that a Dayas award could help you boost your musical talents and who knows you could become a celebrity among your family and friends." Application forms and further details are available from HCC's Music Service on 02380 652037. The closing date for applications is January 31.
