A GANG armed with golf clubs and wooden bats battered a 55-year-old Farnham man in what is believed to have been a premeditated attack in the early hours of Saturday morning. The assault involving eight to 12 men took place outside the man's home in Green Lane at around 1-30 am. The victim was left with serious head injuries and as The Herald went to press, was still in the Royal Surrey Hospital in a "stable" condition. A police spokesman said the man, who had earlier received a phone call from a member of the gang, saying they were coming round to kill him, at first refused to come out of his home when confronted by the mob. When eventually he did come out to try to resolve the matter, he was set upon. A family friend, who tried to intervene, was also injured and was taken to Frimley Park Hospital for treatment. According to the police, the attack was believed to be part of an ongoing dispute and the gang was believed to be from the Aldershot area. After the gang's departure - possibly in three hatchback cars, although police are not certain on this point - the area was scoured for some time by a police helicopter. The following morning police conducted door- to-door enquiries for witnesses in the road. A woman was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm, interviewed at Godalming Police Station and released on police bail. The police have appealed for anyone with information about the attack to contact Pc Lee Hazel on 0845 125 2222 or Crimestoppers, anonymously if they wish, on 0800 555 111. For residents of Green Lane, the drama was not over, for a police helicopter was back on Tuesday night, searching the area between 11 pm and midnight. The road was closed in nearby Weydon Lane, there were armed police on the ground and a torchlit search was carried out. A police spokesman said there had been a report of a disturbance in the street involving two men armed with weapons.  Two men, aged 26 and 23, were arrested for being in possession of an article with a blade and were still in police custody as The Herald went to press. A third man, aged 23, was also in custody after being arrested for being in possession of an article with a blade.  However, police said the two sets of arrests were not connected and neither was either connected with Saturday's assault.
