THE Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, led by German conductor Bruno Weil, plays The Anvil in Basingstoke on November 9 at 7.45pm.

The programme begins with the bustling Overture to Mozart’s last opera, The Magic Flute.

This is followed by Haydn’s genial and engaging Sinfonia Concertante. Written at the height of his popularity during his second visit to London, it is a concerto for four soloists - violin, cello, oboe and bassoon - who swap the musical material between themselves and with the orchestra in delightful style.

The evening ends with Beethoven’s Symphony no.6 (Pastoral), which was inspired by his deep love of the Austrian countryside.

The five movements of the symphony encompass the joys of solitary contemplation and a peasants’ celebration, a summer thunderstorm, and a final hymn of thanksgiving.
