WITH team GB doing so well in Rio, there was definitely a competitive spirit in the air in Selborne over the weekend of August 13 and14 as hundreds of families headed to Gilbert’s Games.
The event, held annually at Gilbert White’s House, is jam-packed with fun sports and games and given an 18th-century twist.
Young and old competed for the best score on melon rolling, a nod to Gilbert White’s well documented love of growing melons, and games of trap and ball, coconut shy, aunt Sally, bootbowling and more kept the crowds entertained.
Experts were on hand to show revellers how to play stool ball, a precursor of cricket and ‘Gilbert White’ himself was challenged to a ferocious game of croquet on the main lawn. Other lawn games, such as giant checkers and pick-up sticks, were also popular.
On the Saturday, guests were joined by Mere Down Falconry, who brought a selection of birds of prey and that flew in two displays. On Sunday, Surrey Ferret Rescue delighted children and adults with ferret racing, walkingand handling.
Their displays were said to be a “great interactive experience” and visitors enjoyed being able to meet and handle the racers, as well as choosing a favourite to win.
Sunday also saw Hampshire Regency Dancers perform three times, with workshops for visitors to try their hand at 18th and 19th century dances. The dancers all wore historic costumes and also set up a period picnic area.
Gilbert’s Games will return for its 10th anniversary event in August 2017, but meanwhile the great outdoor summer activities continue at Gilbert White’s with a performance of The Hound of the Baskervilles onAugust 28. For further information visit www.gilbertwhiteshouse.org.uk.
