SAINSBURY'S has issued a plea to glass recyclers not to abandon bags of bottles in the Alton store car park, but to take the bottles to the relocated bins in the Turk Street car park opposite. According to store secretary Debby Bridger, as a result of extension works at Sainsbury's the glass recycling bins have been temporarily relocated to the car park behind Woolworths. This arrangement will remain in force until October when it is hoped the work at Sainsbury's will be completed. Work began in January to implement plans, approved in November 2003, to provide a large extension and single storey car park at Alton Sainsbury's. The extension will increase the store's floorspace by 1,284 square metres to 5,518 square metres, representing an increase in retail space by 48 per cent. The refurbished store will also include a coffee bar. The car park deck will adjoin the new part of the building, and revised plans show that the deck will provide an extra 140 parking spaces which will be used by Sainsbury's and town centre shoppers. The car park is to be managed on a pay-to-park basis, with Sainsbury's shoppers able to claim the money back at the tills. The project is expected to take around six months to complete.
