Sir, – At the EU's behest, Farnham traffic is in turmoil, and will stay so until alterations
to Firgrove Hill bridge are completed. This must be the most fat-headed project ever envisaged:
• It will pitch oversized lorries straight into Bridge Square and Downing Street where in fact they should be banned.
• It will cost, we are told, £160,000, which money should have been reserved for a better purpose.
• It will preserve the appalling bottlenecks on both carriageways of the A31.
• It will stand as a monument to boneheaded bureaucracy for decades to come.
What was actually needed on Firgrove Hill was the following:
• A new bridge over the bypass to open the latter up to free flow on a two lane dual carriageway.
• A new bridge over the railway if necessary, to match the line and level of the new road bridge, and with pavements and cycle track.
• A new traffic study of the A287 - Arthur Road - Alfred Road - Station Approach - Hookstile Lane complex.
• Roadworks to realise the recommendations of the Study.
Throughout 1998 the UK's NET contribution to EU was over £12,000,000 for every calendar day and in 1999, £6,000,000 for every calendar day. A fortnight of that, even at the lower rate, would have paid for the work suggested above, and another month of it for an A3 tunnel under the Hindhead traffic lights.
