VASILISA Ahramenka from Weydon School and her partner Alessio Surenkov-Gultchev from Christ’s College Guildford have won a gold medal in their first international competition at Denmark’s Frederiksberg Runddel Ice Rink.

The duo were awarded the highest scores they’ve ever received in a competition, beating their previous high scores.

Alessio and Vasilisa, a year nine pupil at Weydon, are current British silver medallists having competed in the British Ice Skating Championships in 2017 and will be competing in the Bracknell Ice Dance competition in April.

The duo’s coaches Katie Bennett and David Lunn, who has taught for over 40 years at European, World and Olympic level, have offered great support, as have their sponsors GLL Sports Foundation Athletes and supporting coaches Helen Prior and Dancing on Ice’s Hamish Gaman.

Laura Butler, progress and achievement leader at Weydon for Vasilisa, said: “Everyone is extremely proud of their achievements on their first international competition representing Great Britain, as there was a very strong field competing.

“Other skaters in their category competed from Sweden, Germany and Finland. We wish them all the best of luck for their next competition.”

Vasilisa, 13, trains six times a week before school.
