ENTHUSIASTIC golfers met at Farnham Park Golf Course to play a round in memory of Johann van de Merwe, the general manager of the golf course, who sadly died earlier this year.

As well as celebrating his life, the event also raised money for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, which cared for Johann in his final days.

The course was enjoyed by all who took part, especially Carol Greenwood, one of the directors of the club, who came first, with a score of 48 points.

Liam O’Rourke came a close second with 44 points, and Celia Pitkin won the nine-hole competition with 23 points. Carol was presented with the Johann van de Merwe memorial trophy, which was generously donated by Derek and Wendy Ives in memory of the former general manager.

A raffle, barbecue and putting competition boosted the grand total to more than £2,700, all of which will go towards funding the hospice care which Phyllis Tuckwell provides for local patients and families who are living with a terminal illness, such as cancer.

“We would like to thank all of those who donated auction and raffle prizes,” said Roger Vernier of Farnham Park Golf Club.

“And of course all of the hole sponsors: The Horse and Jockey pub, Denmead, Light Lines, Forest Cobbler Bordon, BH Building, Rake Remediation, Charsley and Warren, Bats Hogsty, D&G Hardware, Barry Croucher and David Evans, Stihl UK, Naomi Simpson and family, Keyline Builders Merchant and Town Meadow Golf Club.

“Their support was very much appreciated by the organising committee and made the day even more successful.”

Ashleigh Tennent, community fundraising manager at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, added: “Our thanks go to Farnham Park Golf Club for organising this wonderful golf day in memory of Johann and in support of Phyllis Tuckwell.

“We would also like to join with the organising committee in thanking the directors and staff of Farnham Park Golf Club, and all of the members and guests who supported the event.”
