FARNHAM Park Golf Club presented a cheque to Phyllis Tuckwell hospice this month after a summer of birthday celebrations contributed toward the final figure.

The cheque was handed over to the charity on September 1, with the sum of funds raised totalling an impressive £1,824.10.

The Farnham Park-based club raised the money on their 50th anniversary on June 18, exactly five decades to the day after the golf club was opened.

Upon opening in 1966, the par-three course was the only public golf course in Surrey, with all others in the area private.

The course was designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton, who also supervised the construction of the nine holes.

The charity day saw 40 two-ball groups playing 18 holes of Stableford, with Liam O’Rourke and his partner Roger Vernier coming out as the eventual winners.

General manager Johan van der Merwe said that everyone enjoyed themselves on the day, with the weather playing its part in what was a hugely successful afternoon.

The £1,824 was raised through entrance fees and a raffle draw which followed the completion of the Stableford competition.

There were also putting competitions and fines for any hazards found around the course, each time drawing £1 to the kitty, and contributing to the final sum, said a club spokesman.
