Lane closures and night-time shutdowns have been in place for much of the pandemic on the A31 Alton Road, with Surrey County Council workmen completing work on the eastbound carriageway this week and turning their attention westbound.
The ‘resilience’ works have been funded by the Department for Transport, with additional investment by the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership, and will see around £1 million spent on carriageway reconstruction and surfacing, and a further £460,000 on new drainage infrastructure.
It is hoped this “extensive overhaul” will reduce the risk of flooding on the notoriously flood-prone three-mile stretch of road, avoiding further damage to the newly-laid surface.
Workmen have to date completed around 40 per cent of the project, which also comprises extensive vegetation and ditching work.
Night-time road closures, from 7pm to 6am, will remain in place on the westbound carriageway of the A31 Alton Road until July 31 – with the A31 Farnham bypass next in line for improvements.
