THE heat was building in many a kitchen as competitors prepared for the first “Great Grayshott bake off”.

The rolling pins were out at Grayshott Cricket Club and aprons were on to see who could be the star baker during the fun day, which raised £800 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Club spokesman Graham Sampson said: “Organisers Laura Hurrell and Dan Brown were amazed at the huge response to the competition as the cakes and bakes kept arriving at the pavilion throughout the afternoon. Everything from gravity defying chocolate cakes, eclairs, scones, peppermint buttons, traditional bakes to savoury, sausage rolls, spicy pastry treats and Sri Lankan specialities were on display.”

The judges, including Jose Stead and Jan Bebbington from Macmillan, had a difficult job judging a winner.

The three category winners were (pictured above from left to right) Charlotte Hilsdon with her creative peppermint buttons, star baker Laura Hurrell with her gravity defying chocolate cake and Devi Sriharan with her savoury spicy pastries. Some of the prizes were donated by Mary Berry, the star of the BBC’s The Great British Bake Off.
