FARNHAM'S first 'Greenway' route for non-motorised transport is now officially open, following a rain-soaked ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The fully-signposted Scholars Greenway route, linking Potters Gate School, where the ceremony took place, to Heath End and William Cobbett schools via Farnham Park, has been several years in the pipeline.

It was opened officially by Surrey county councillor Pat Frost on Sunday.

Cyclists and walkers hoping to explore it through a guided sponsored event following the opening on Sunday were forced to delay for better weather.

But a second route, The Weyside Greenway, will hopefully be opening within months, said Ian Capon of MyBikeStation and Transition Farnham.

Transition Farnham, the driving force behind the Greenway projects, also hopes in due course to establish a crossing of the A31 so that the Greenways can link into the national cycle network.
