MAKING mud pies, building dens and dressing up as slugs was all part of the fun for more than 550 girls from Girlguiding Surrey at a ‘Growing Up Wild’ event at Norbury Park, Dorking.

Haslemere Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows joined units from across the county descended on the park and tried their hand at new skills.

While older girls got stuck into practical conservation tasks, willow weaving and bushcraft activities, younger members had a go at wild art, species spotting, nature games and jewellery making.

The day, which was organised in partnership with Surrey Wildlife Trust’s education team, ended with a sing-song and marshmallow toasting round a campfire.

The event was also attended by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Michael More-Molyneux, who said: “We’re in lovely countryside with lovely weather and the young people have obviously enjoyed themselves and done something productive and exciting.

“The girls are making friends, they’re learning new things and they are preparing for their future.

“This sort of collaboration where two charities can work together is terribly important and so sensible – it’s a win win for everyone.”
