POLICE are appealing for information after an armed robber stole more than £500 from a Liphook petrol station last week. Detectives in Alton are calling for any witnesses to the robbery, which took place at the Jet Service Station in Portsmouth Road on Thursday, January 4, to come forward. The robber entered the small petrol station at 7-50 pm. He selected a number of items and placed them on the counter to distract the cashier before producing a hand gun and ordering the woman to open the till. He then made off with £545 in cash and eight packets of cigarettes. The cashier was uninjured. The man is described as being white, in his late 30s or early 40s, six feet tall and of slim build. Staff at the Jet Service Station told The Herald this week that they had no further comment to make on the incident as it was "company policy not to discuss security issues". Detective Constable John McCaig said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and witnessed the robbery, or recognises the description of the offender, to contact the police immediately". • Anyone with any information should contact Det Con McCaig at Alton CID on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. And detectives in Winchester are also appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a Shell garage in Wickham on Tuesday, January 9, around 8-30 am. Anyone with information should contact Winchester CID on 0845 045 4545. Police cannot confirm whether the two robberies are connected.
