THIS October half-term, Gilbert White’s House Museum at Selborne will play host to a range of autumn-themed activities and workshops.

Throughout the week, which runs until October 29, young visitors will be able to take a sketching kit with them for free and will be challenged to sketch what they see.

On Tuesday, October 24, the museum is holding a drop-in autumn leaves craft day between 11am and 2pm. Just turn up and get ready to make some art with the colours of autumn.

On the Wednesday (October 25), there will be an opportunity to get creative with animation, inspired by Gilbert White’s writing and love of nature. Working in groups with the gang from Strong Island media, children and teens can create wildlife characters and animate them to tell the story of autumn.

This full-day workshop will see participants achieve the ‘Discover and Explore’ level of Arts Award (artsaward.org.uk). The workshop is suitable for youngsters aged five and older and booking is essential as places are limited.

Hallowe’en and bonfire night are not far away and children are invited to cook dampers and marshmallows in the fire, before settling down to listen to tails from storyteller Bluebird who will be flying by Gilbert White’s house on Thursday, October 26, to tell tales with an autumnal feel in her own gentle style around a campfire.

The last event of the half-term period is the annual autumn sleepover at the Field Studies Centre on Friday, October 27, when young visitors over the age of five will be able to enjoy a variety of nature-themed activities including broomstick making, campfire cooking, and a night-time nature walk.

All materials, refreshments and breakfast will be included in the £20 ticket price.
