BRIDGE House Care Home in Elstead has celebrated the 107th birthday of long-time resident Phyllis Mills.

The home celebrated Phyllis’ latest landmark with a birthday party including glasses of pink bubbly.

The daughter of a blacksmith, Phyllis was the eldest of three and had two children herself, a boy and a girl.

Her fondest memories are of picking hops with her mother and sleeping in the cow sheds with big bales of hay, commenting: “I slept in a manger, the lord wasn’t the only one who slept in a manger!”.

She doesn’t drink alcohol, except the odd sherry, and has never smoked.

Her advice to youngsters is “don’t smoke, don’t drink, always try to keep cheerful, have a steady life and don’t rush things”.

According to Bridge House, Phyllis’s favourite quote when asked how she is is “I’m still breathing”, always delivered with a smile on her face.

The party added to a summer full of fun activities at Bridge House including a music festival, a farmyard-themed Door Step Challenge, and a First World War garden party, which included the release of homing pigeons and an afternoon tea including war time sandwiches and songs.
