A HASLEMERE man who claimed this week to have spotted a three-kilometre long ice asteroid in the earth's upper atmosphere may have solved a puzzle which has been baffling Spanish scientists.

Alan Maitland, a retired business consultant, enjoys astronomy as one of his hobbies and first noticed the asteroid in November 1998.

His claim is now being investigated by scientists in Spain, where large chunks of ice, believed to have come from the upper atmosphere, have recently fallen.
