SEVERAL hundred people turned out in Haslemere High Street last Thursday evening (December 16) for the first Christmas carol concert held there for more than nine years.

Haslemere mayor Simon Dear opened proceedings at 6.30pm. The event was then compered by town crier Christian Ashdown. The town band and Harmonix choir accompanied the singing.

Complimentary mulled wine and mince pies were provided by Haslemere Chamber of Trade and Commerce members. Hundreds of mince pies and 72 bottles of mulled wine were consumed, along with soft drinks for those who preferred.

The crowd was entertained by a stilt-walking snow queen and mischievous light gliders.

Town clerk Lisa O’Sullivan said: "Because of the ongoing Covid situation, the organising committee considered carefully whether or not to go ahead with the event.

"It was felt this relatively small outdoor event, held in a space where people were able to distance as they wished, should go ahead.

"We are so pleased this decision was made. After what has been another difficult year, hundreds of our residents came out to get into the festive mood and the feedback on the night was overwhelmingly positive.

"The town council would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Christmas and new year."
