What a difference a day makes! Twenty-four hours after a disappointing league defeat, Haslemere reached the last eight of the national Hockey Association Vase.
Having lost to Southampton University on Saturday, Haslemere moved a little further down the coast to play league rivals and the Vase holders, Weymouth.
Despite a 'healthy' evening's entertainment in Bournemouth, Haslemere were up for the task, fully focused and determined.
Weymouth, who beat Haslemere in the league last month, at first struggled to get the ball out of their half.
Haslemere's stick-to-stick passing was far more clinical and centre-half Duncan Berry moved the ball quickly for his front-runners to test the home defenders who, one way or another, dealt with everything thrown at them.
Weymouth were mostly indebted to some brilliant 'keeping, as had been the case in the two previous meetings (the first match was drawn 4-4).
He was, though, beaten by a short-corner strike by Guy Marchant midway through the first half.
Weymouth's chances of scoring improved as Haslemere pushed forward, leaving themselves open to the breakaway attack.
Cracknell, Stokes, South and Davenport took care of things until skipper Stokes retained his top goal-scoring status. Alas, this time it was past his own 'keeper when trying to clear his lines.
A little against the run of play, Weymouth took the lead before half-time with a deflected short-corner shot that left Dan Hollyman helpless.
The second half was still young when Marchant performed a near carbon-copy of his first goal to level the scores.
And Haslemere regained the lead soon after when Berry's forging run through a tight-knit defence ended with the ball sneaking over the line.
The wind in their sails, Haslemere looked to put the game out of sight and would have, but for a superb display of goalkeeping.
Not to be outdone, Hollyman earned applause after saving a penalty stroke – awarded after his own rash challenge.
The last 15 minutes were a tense affair, but 3-2 it was to remain, taking Haslemere into the quarter-finals.
The draw has not been kind to them. Haslemere will travel to Didsbury Northern, near Manchester, probably on March 16.
Haslemere weekend squad: Hollyman, Davenport,. Cracknell, D Mayson, Stokes, Tibbits, Clarke, Hadrell, South, Berry, Rogers, Marchant, A Mayson, Jones, Alliss, Gee.
