HASLEMERE is gearing up to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year, with a number of events planned from June 2 to June 5.

Streets bedecked with flags: To mark this remarkable occasion the streets will be decorated with Commonwealth Flags – marking the Queen’s contribution, not only to the UK, but to the whole Commonwealth.

Permanent memorial: There will be celebrations over the Jubilee weekend, but in addition a tower clock will be installed on the Haslewey Community Centre.

This Jubilee clock will be a permanent record of the Queen’s record of service.

The clock will be four faced and will chime the hours in the daytime. The cost will be met by public subscription – details from www.haslemerefestival.org.uk

All donations are welcome – it will be possible to sponsor a clock face. The weather vane has already been sponsored.

Bonfire and fireworks: From 8pm on Thursday, June 2 there will be entertainment up at the Woolmer Hill Sports Ground and a torchlight procession will form at 8.45pm to process to the bonfire. The bonfire will be lit as a beacon at the same time as beacons are lit across the whole country at sunset.

Food and drink will be available and a firework display will round off the evening.

Charter Fair: The Haslemere Charter Fair will be open from 11am to 5pm on Friday, June 3. This year it will have a Jubilee flavour and stallholders are asked to dress their stalls and themselves in an appropriate manner.

The High Street and West Street will be closed to traffic and the entire area turned into an arena where there will be many things to do, rides to enjoy and lots of stalls, all offering a wide range of products and services and fun for all the family.

There is a free courtesy bus which follows a route from Shottermill (the bus stop outside the Working Men’s Club) direct to the fair.

The buses will run from 11.30am to 5pm.

In 1393 Richard II and the Bishop of Salisbury confirmed an order dated April 29, 1221, allowing a weekly market and an annual fair to be held in the town. Although the weekly markets were already established the first fair was reported to be held in 1394.

There is no entrance fee for visitors.

Rotary scarecrow competition: Following the success of the first scarecrow competition last year, there will be a second competition this year with the judging taking place on Saturday, June 4. The theme will be royalty, with judging on Lion Green at 3pm.

Full details from the Rotary Club of Haslemere.

Civic church service: At 11.30am on Sunday, June 5 there will be a civic service to mark the occasion in St Bartholomew’s Church.

The mayor will be present and the choir will sing a specially composed anthem.

The procession will include floats from local societies, businesses and schools. It will also include classic cars from every decade of the Queen’s reign.

Lion Green tea party: On Lion Green at 2pm on Sunday, June 5 there will be stalls and amusements and tea – with scones – for 2,000 people. Admission is free, but the cost of tea for two will be £6, booked in advance.

Seven bands on stage: To complete the entertainment on Lion Green on Sunday, June 5 there will be seven bands performing – one for every decade of Her Majesty’s reign – including local bands and a Queen tribute band.

The finale will be Queen by Candlelight, featuring a live cast of West End singers, accompanied by a live rock band. Experience Queen as you have never heard them before.

The concert will feature some of the most iconic songs of all time including Bohemian Rhapsody, It’s a Kind of Magic, We Are The Champions, Who Wants to Live Forever and many more. The show must go on. So attend this unforgettable experience guaranteed to rock you.

Dedication of the Jubilee clock: At 4.30pm on Sunday, June 5 the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux, with the mayor of Haslemere, will dedicate the Jubilee clock.
