On Wednesday brave Ethel O'Connor (77) and her 79-year-old husband Pat received certificates for service to the community from the divisional commander for Central Hampshire, Steve Lawrence.
He praised the couple for their courageous actions and told them: "We don't give these awards out lightly. We give them to members of the public who have demonstrated public-spirited action in different ways, including fighting crime. It is our way of recording our appreciation of what members of the public do."
Liss policeman Pc Brad Woollerson presented Mr and Mrs O'Connor with a garden gift voucher to thank them for their brave actions.
Courageous Mrs O'Connor became so angry last month when she suspected two men were trying to steal from her elderly neighbour that she charged into the bungalow and challenged them.
Standing just five feet tall, she grabbed hold of one of the men and clung to him desperately in an attempt to stop him escaping. She was dragged towards the front door but still refused to relinquish her grip.
Eventually the man punched her in the chest, throwing her back against the wall, and made his escape empty-handed.
Mrs O'Connor, who has suffered two strokes in the past eight years, was left injured and winded in the hallway.
Meanwhile Mr O'Connor had seen one man run off and came on the scene as the second was making his escape. He chased him right into the centre of Liss but then lost the man.
Afterwards Mrs O'Connor told The Herald she wasn't a bit frightened. "I was very angry. I thought how dare they pick on someone so old and vulnerable."
A police spokesman said there was no doubt that the O'Connors' actions had foiled an attempted theft
This week Mrs O'Connor said she felt "very honoured" to receive the award.
