HEADLEY Down Community Association is hoping to secure an extra £4,500 from HCC to carry out an extensive programme of building improvements.
The organisation, based at Woodlands Hall, has gained grants from Hampshire Police Authority, EHDC, Headley Parish Council and Hampshire County Council which will go towards the improvements but a shortfall still remains.
"We are hoping to revamp the hall to improve security, general maintenance and improve the kitchen area. We want to update the CCTV cameras with a digital system. There are plans to improve the entrance hall and replace the gate for the children's playground,"explained Janet Easton, the community association manager.
Headley Down has already been awarded £3,200 from the county council which will contribute towards upgrading the CCTV, fire and security alarm systems. It will also help to fund the refurbishment of the kitchen, to repair and redecorate the ladies' toilets and repair or renew light fittings throughout the building.
However the total needed to fund these improvements is closer to £14,000.
"It is one of several awards we have been trying to secure and although this may seem like a substantial amount from HCC, it will only cover a small amount. We hope that the county council can redress the shortfall because without it we cannot take all the necessary measures to improve the hall," explained Mrs Easton.
HCC's executive member for recreation and heritage, Margaret Snaith, agreed partnership funding from the Community Buildings Fund for six village hall and community association improvement projects.
This funding is provided for building repairs, extensions and refurbishment, health and safety issues, equipment to improve the buildings and feasibility studies.
Mrs Snaith said: "These buildings play a pivotal role in community life and it is essential that they are kept in good condition so people can enjoy all sorts of activities, from evening classes to play groups, in a safe and comfortable environment.
"We hope the funding will ensure more people have access to a better quality of life."
Village halls, community associations and church organisations which hold community events or activities can apply for funding from the community buildings fund.
