WHEN Fleetwood Mac was in a state of flux after the departure of founder and leader Peter Green in 1970, it was to Headley (via Alton) that this world-famous band decamped to regroup.

And it was while the band’s members were living at the country house Benifold, in Headley Hill Road, that the Fleetwood Mac known to most - the post Peter Green Fleetwood Mac - began to evolve.

The extraordinary story of how Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan moved into the Victorian mansion at the end of 1970, and the central role the house played in the professional and personal lives of band members (who later included Bobs Welch and Weston) until 1974, is told in Mick Fleetwood’s new autobiography Play On (Hodder & Stoughton).
