THE Whitehill and Bordon Walking to Health scheme has been cancelled due to poor attendance.

The East Hampshire District Council-led scheme aimed to help individuals walk their way slowly back to fitness.

But it is hoped that the scheme can be relaunched in the new year.

The district councillor for Hogmoor and the Liberal Democrat active lifestyles spokesperson, Philip Drury, said: "Obviously the loss of Whitehill and Bordon's Walking to Health is a great shame, but with only two or three walkers and apparently little interest from new walkers, the district council seems to have decided that it is no longer viable.

"I have spoken to our officer concerned and am hopeful we can a relaunch - perhaps in a different format in the new year."

In the meantime, keen walkers can still stretch their legs across the land in the Deadwater Valley Trust.

County councillor Adam Carew, who is vice chairman of the Deadwater Valley Trust, said: "This is a great shame, but the good news is that our Deadwater Valley Trust Wednesday walkers group is still going strong."

The group meets every Wednesday at Conde Way car park at 10.50am for a guided walk with the trust's rangers.

Each walk lasts for about two hours and is usually followed by a pub lunch.
