About three-quarters of A&E arrivals at the Royal Surrey County Hospital seen within four hoursReal-time surgery from two of the Guildford-based hospital’s operating theatres was beamed via satellite link to a conference centre in London.
Around 500 surgeons, nurses and industry partners were able to observe the procedures as they happened and interact with the surgeons through moderators.
Delegates were able to observe five complex keyhole procedures including upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and gynaecological surgery.
Professor Rockall, a consultant surgeon at the Royal Surrey, said: “This is the fourth time in 20 years that Royal Surrey has either hosted the annual scientific conference of The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI) or provided the live surgery link-up.
“The Royal Surrey was the first to transmit surgery in high definition 3D back in 2013 and is now the first hospital to transmit in 4K.”
