A CALL to arms to help create a tree-lined boulevard for Haslemere has been made by Wey Hill in Bloom.

Work started in the summer for the grand scheme, made possible thanks to donations from businesses and residents, plus grants from Shottermill Great War Memorial Trust, The Community Foundation for Surrey, Haslemere Town Council and Waverley Borough Council.

In bloom chairman Ken Griffiths said: “The purpose of moving from annual bedding to structural planting, is to provide year round interest with less demand on day to day maintenance.

“All the wooden planters are being replaced with long lasting and maintenance-free glass fibre planters, each proudly displaying the Haslemere Town Crest. The new planters will be planted with either standard bay trees or low yew balls, providing height variations to create interest.

“The standard bays will be underplanted with English lavender and white tulips, to provide spring and summer colour. In total we will be providing 60 planters with 41 bay trees and 19 yew balls. In addition, we will continue to manage the gardens around Haslewey and the locality office, as well as planting spring bulbs on Lion Green.

“As a community group we rely entirely on volunteers who have a passion for Haslemere and especially this end of the town. This is a ‘call to arms’ to ask the town’s good people join us in the transformation of the street scene in Wey Hill and Junction Place.”

The group needs volunteers who can spare a couple of hours on:

Saturday, October 8: From 9am. Replace and compost fill all planters at Junction Place and Haslewey, replant existing bay trees, plant Haslewey troughs with winter and spring plants.

Sunday, October 9: Fron 10am. Replace and compost fill planters in Wey Hill, replanting existing bay trees.

Saturday, October 15: From 9am. Plant up all new planters with new bay trees, plant white tulips in new and existing planters and top dress with slate chippings.

Just turn up on the day. of call Mr Griffiths on 07860 263055.
