FARNHAM’s two Rotary clubs will join thousands of others around the world supporting this weekend’s World Polio Day by raising awareness and donations for the campaign to End Polio Now - and forever.
Rotarians will be in the Lion & Lamb Yard between 10am and 4pm tomorrow armed with information about what has been and what is being done by Rotary International to eradicate this severely disabling and devastating disease.
In 1988, polio was present in 125 countries, paralysing 350,000 young children every year. Now the number of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three – Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan – with more than two-and-a-half billion children receiving vaccinations, thanks to the help of Rotary.
Fourteen cases have been recorded in the first eight months of 2018, but the end is very much in sight and Rotary has committed to raising £114m between now and 2020 in support of global eradication efforts.
