An appeal to help look after the local hedgehog population has been issued by wildlife expert Graham Cornick, who is currently caring for 30 rescued animals that are too underweight to survive hibernation.
Many of the hedgehogs now being looked after by Mr Cornick and his team of volunteers at Hydestile Resident Animals were rescued and taken to him after being found in the Haslemere area.
Mr Cornick said: “Hedgehogs are definitely on the decline and every one saved is vital.
“We have had more than 30 underweight hedgehogs brought in to us and I know that three other centres have had to close their doors because they can’t take any more.
“The mild weather has been a big problem for hedgehogs. More have been born late and they are too underweight to survive hibernation.
“At this time of year, they should weigh 600 grams but our rescued hedgehogs are 178 grams, which is nothing.
“They are still in with a chance, however, if they are picked up now and receive the right care.”
Hydestile Resident Animals is happy to provide advice and help to anyone who finds a hedgehog in need.
