HASLEMERE Town Hall flag flew at half mast in mourning for the victims of the Westminster terror attack which claimed the lives of four people, including stab victim Pc Keith Palmer.

The town’s Tory MP Jeremy Hunt was an eye-witness as the shocking events unfolded last Wednesday.

The Health Secretary said: “I witnessed much of what happened from the window of my parliamentary office where I was locked down for over an hour. I also knew Pc Palmer, as he greeted me regularly when I cycled through the main gates going into parliament.

“I feel nothing but awe for the brave men and women who defend our democracy and without whom I could not do my job. I am also proud of the magnificent response by paramedics and NHS staff who as ever were there for us when we needed them.”

A minute’s silence was observed at Surrey Police headquarters on Thursday morning. the county’s police and crime commissioner David Munro said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by yesterday’s terrible attack in Westminster and my thoughts remain with all those who have been affected.

“These events are a stark reminder of how much we depend on police officers to protect us all from harm on a daily basis.

“The swift response of the emergency services to yesterday’s attack no doubt prevented an even worse tragedy and I would like to pay particular tribute to the brave actions of Pc Palmer, who sadly lost his life protecting others.

“As Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, tackling the threat of terrorism is one of my key priorities and I would urge everyone in the county to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police as a matter of urgency.

“We must continue to work together to defeat terrorism and those who seek to create fear and disharmony in our communities.”

Heartfelt condolences to the victims were sent by mayor Sharan Abeysundara, who said: “We in Haslemere stand united with our capital at this very sad time.

“We send our sympathies to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in this cowardly attack at the heart of our democracy.

“To the many brave men and women of the emergency services, members of the public and those in government who acted swiftly and selflessly to secure, protect and care for the people affected, for running toward danger instead of from it, we humbly thank you. Terrorism may try and shake the foundations of our nation and cause chaos but we stand more united embracing our diversity in the face of adversity with an even stronger resolve to work harder to protect the ideals and values we as a nation hold so fervently.”
