A SUSPECTED drug driver escaped without charge following a head-on smash on the A287 at Frensham Pond last Friday evening, after doctors were unable to draw blood from him.

Herald chief reporter Daniel Gee was on an attachment with Surrey Police’s western division response team when officers responded to the crash shortly after 8pm and arrested a 34-year-old man under section four of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

The suspect’s Peugeot 306 collided with a Saab and crashed into a ditch, partially blocking the road and scattering a 100 metre stretch of the A287 with debris.

Both drivers escaped serious injury, but officers arrested the 34 year old, a known heroin addict, after he was found in possession of Class A drug paraphernalia.

The suspect was escorted to the Royal Surrey County Hospital for a blood test. But after a long wait in A&E, “due to habitual drugs use” medical staff were unable to draw blood from him.

As a result, the 34 year old was released without charge. See next week’s Herald for a full account and more photos of the attachment.
